첫 울음

Everything happened so fast. In just a matter of hours, we became a family of three.

Shortly after dinner at 9:30pm, Young-Mi felt some warm trickle, which turned out her water breaking. Three hours and a few doctor calls later, we were at the hospital. Oddly enough, even after her water broke, it didn’t feel much like an urgency—Young-Mi was calm and usual, which made people around them at ease.

상황이 순식간에 진행되었고, 저녁 밥상에서는 두 명이던 우리 가족이 다음날 아침 무렵에는 세 명이 되었답니다.

퇴근후 저녁을 먹고 나서 쉬려는데 영미가 이상한 느낌이 든다고 하더니, 그렇게 조용히 양수가 터졌습니다. 긴급하다면 긴급한 상황인데도 영미는 너무나 차분했고, 그렇게 병원과 몇 차례 통화를 주고 받으며 확인을 한 다음, 자정이 지난 시각에 우리는 입원 수속을 밟았습니다. 양수가 터졌다 하면 으레 상상하듯 긴박하고 위급한 느낌과는 달리, 웃으며 농담까지 나누고 있었지요.

Contractions began a couple hours later, and by 4am Young-Mi was in serious pains and began to tumble and groan. Since we had already decided to use epidural, by this hour an anesthetist was called for to administer. Suprisingly—or not so surprisingly, for that matter—she started to feel much better and smiled again. From that point on, through sunrise, we came back to our calm and easy selves.

오래지 않아 진통이 시작되었고, 새벽 4시 무렵에는 고통에 신음하며 이리저리 뒤척이는 모습을 보아야 했습니다. 임신기간 중에 의사와 논의하면서 이미 무통주사 사용을 결정했기에, 진통이 심해지면서 마취의를 부르게 되었구요. 마취의 효력은 정말 놀랄 정도로 빨리 찾아와서, 15분쯤 지나니 다시 편안해진 모습으로 함께 웃음도 나눌 수 있을 정도가 됐답니다. 그렇게 해가 뜨고 아침을 맞는 동안은 다시 평온한 시간이 되었습니다.

Labor started at around 9:30am, and we heard the first cry at 10:26am. Having heard of stories about 10-, 12-hour labor, we just felt incredibly blessed for such smooth process. A happy mom, a happy baby, and a happy dad, now take the first step together.

아침 9:30 무렵에 분만에 들어갔는데, 의료진이 들어오고 채 한 시간이 되지 않아 10:27에는 아기 울음소리를 듣게 되었습니다. 누구는 10시간 진통을 했다더라, 누구는 12시간이 걸렸다더라, 무서운 경험담들을 듣고 난 뒤라, 비교적 순탄했던 저희의 분만 과정이 더욱 고맙더군요. 상상으로만 준비하던 엄마 아빠 아기의 세 가족 체제는 이렇게 첫 걸음을 떼게 됩니다.
