We wanted a name that…
- Is easy to spell and pronounce for both Koreans and non-Koreans
- Does not sound too ethnic nor too generic
- Does not rely on two separate—English and Korean—names to use one or the other as middle-name

- 한국이름과 영어이름을 따로 정해서 둘 중 하나를 미들네임으로 쓰지 않게 할 것
Within these three simple criteria—yeah, right?—we started brainstorming as soon as we knew it’s a girl. Ask any Korean expat parent, and they will probably tell you their version of naming struggle. While the criteria might vary, the foundational challenge still remains—you would like your child to culturally blend in but not completely abandon their cultural heritage.
간단하지만 간단하지 않은 세 가지 기준을 가지고, 몇 달동안 구상에 구상을 이어갔습니다. 외국에서 아이를 낳아 기르는 한국인 부모라면 아마 비슷한 고민을 할 테고, 결정의 기준은 제각기 다르더라도 큰 고민의 줄기는 서로 비슷하리라 생각합니다. 아이가 현지 사회에서 자연스럽게 어울릴 수 있었으면 좋겠지만, 그래도 출신 문화의 배경을 아예 포기하지는 않았으면 좋겠다는 생각이지요.
Six months on the whiteboard and three dozen names later, we decided Hana as the winner. At only four-letter long with two syllables, it’s unmistakably easy to spell and no-brainer to pronounce. Most importantly, the name has a multitude of positive connotations—not only in English and Korean but also in other languages.
6개월여에 걸쳐 수십개의 이름을 곰씹은 끝에, 하나가 최종 후보로 정해졌습니다. 영어로 적었을 때 딱 네 글자라서, 현지인들이 읽고 쓰고 발음하기에도 어려움이 없을 테고. 무엇보다도 ‘하나’라는 단어가 여러 문화권에서 긍정적인 의미로 사용되고 있다는 점도 큰 매력이었지요.

Most Americans will regard it as a variant transliteration of Hannah and most Korean will think of it as a nice Korean name 하나, while those that understand underlying cultural connotations would appreciate the positivity, which is just perfect.
미국인들은 Hannah 라는 영어 이름의 다른 표기로, 한국인들은 한국 이름 하나 로 받아들일 테고. 혹시 다른 언어권의 의미를 이해하는 사람들은 저마다 긍정적 의미를 읽어낼 테니 여러 모로 좋은 이름이 되어주겠지요!
